The best thing you can do to be a support to a survivor of sexual or gender-based violence is to believe her/them.

  • Don’t judge or blame her/them.
  • Listen to her/them. Let her tell you as much or as little as she/they wants.
  • Help her/them find support.
  • Ask her/them what she needs–don’t tell her/them what to do.
  • Remind her/them of her/their skills and strengths.
  • Get support for your own feelings and reactions.
